Last fall, as a result of leading a parent forum at our church, I decided to begin writing what I could remember about how God made Himself real to our family as I read the Bible aloud when the kids were little. Questions were coming my direction about how my kids knew so much about the Bible, and what do I recommend for discipling kids when they are little, or did I use a curriculum to teach my kids, etc, etc.
I spent one day a week for several weeks last winter, when it was too cold to go outside, writing our family’s story. I planned to have it ready for families at the Mills Church this fall by binding it at Kinkos. I thought, “Maybe this will encourage my friends with young children to not be afraid to just open the Bible and read it as part of their bedtime story routine and then just wait and see how God uses it.”
It was fun to remember back to all the ways that God entered His Story as we read and made what we were learning together relevant. Lately, I’ve discovered that even though our family times are now fewer and farther between, with teenage kids trying to set their own personal spiritual disciplines, my kids are still drawing on what we learned together by reading the Bible when they were young.
As I wrote I discovered just how important this practice has been to building their spiritual foundation. So, with all that said and a few “random” contacts along the way, my book, called Living God’s Story, is available on Amazon.com. I never intended that my story would end up in book form, but, well, you never know….
